 All the Manets

A speed project* to see how image searches yield small variations.

  1. Search “Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe” (1862) by Eduard Manet.

  2. Collect the top 250 results.

  3. Compile in a single GIF to compare variations in cropping, color balance, watermarks—all evidence of how digital images fail to capture accurate information.

*A speed project is a creative piece made in under one day, usually to manifest a simple idea or to quickly sketch out a concept.

Manet’s painting is a unique object, hanging in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. In the age of image searches, you can see nearly limitless copies of the painting, each a variation of the original. All the Manets are products of color balance errors, cropping, editorial additions, and resolution manipulations.
